THE ART OF UPCYCLING by OCEAN SOLE
Imagine: a beach in Kenya, white sand and blue waves. The sun shines down on what is left behind by the waves. Seaweed, shells and something completely different. Something that doesn't belong there, a flip-flop. In fact, the whole beach is scattered with these flip flops!
A large part of the world's population is wearing flip flops. This footwear is cheap to buy, but not durable in use. Together with an underdeveloped waste disposal system, this causes flip flops in developing countries to end up in nature and eventually in the oceans. Passionate about the oceans and aware of the importance of ecosystems, the Kenyan Ocean Sole tackles this problem.
The washed- up flip flops are collected, cleaned and glued. The creative team of craftsmen then processes the flip flops into colourful animals. Three local and global problems are tackled: prevention and control of pollution of land and sea by the plastics, job creation and limited logging for wood art works. Ocean Sole's inspiring works of art tell a special story, 'The Art of Upcycling'. The brothers Nicholas and Michael (Nic&Mic) have been the European partner for the colourful slipper art since 2014.
